Meaning « new vision », « Guiss Guiss Bou Bess » wishes to export Senegal, its rythms, its culture and its identity through this riche and unique cocreation. It’s the encounter of two worlds : Mara Seck & Stéphane Costantini – Electro Sabar.
Percussionnist, singer and dancer, Mara was born on January 1986 the son of the renowned Alla Seck, the danser and lyricist of Youssou NDour’s band, the ‘Super Etoile de Dakar’, who prematurely passed away in 1987. Among Alla Seck’s four children, Mara Seck has been the only one who wishes to continue his father’s artistic merit.
Originary from Grenoble, France, Stéphane’s interest in music starts at the age of 7 at the modern music school, where he first studies guitar, then later the drums, during 8 years. At 15, he begins playing with a highschool band and specialise in drums, undergoing a training in mandingue drummings during three years. In 2012, he plays digital music for the first time live with the Electro Hip Hop band from Paris : Clarkk and Co.
Through their musical exchange, Stéphane and Mara want to establish new bridges between electronic music and African music, especially Sabar (Senegalese traditional percussions) and Mbalax (popular music in Senegal).
» ’Jigueenu Africa’ hits you right away with its bouncing synthesizer bass line, handclaps and maze-like layers of Sabar drums. You’ll have this one making rounds in your head for a minute. You need to hear this Senegalese electronic track.” Okayafrica
